They passed a few hours in the Grey Haven, waiting for the last adjustments to be done on their ship, but Elrond wandered away from the rest of the company. These days he often felt overwhelmed by emotions; something he did not think he would experience again after some thousand years.
He felt infinite sorrow and aching, burning, incurable loss… Arwen…he would perhaps never see Arwen, just like he would never see Elros. To him the concept of time had ever been more real than to any other elf he knew…
But Celebran… she was there somewhere, her presence almost palpable, her love drifting above water, calling to him… And he was weary too, weary of Middle Earth, weary of being Lord Elrond the Healer. For once, he had some healing to do.
’To the West?’
None of the people walking on the shore had the courage so far to come up to him and talk to him, though judging from the curious glances, many would have wished to. This one person was a curious sight himself; he wore a long, weather-beaten grey cloak, and never removed his hood from his face. The material of his clothes was excellent, but looked ancient and overused as well… And the voice ringed somewhat familiar to him; as if he had heard this, or knew a close kin of this stranger very well…
’To Valimar.’
’You do not look overjoyed.’
The statement was mildly put, the stranger said it in a soft voice, but it still felt intrusive.
’It comes with a price.’
’But you also have much to receive. Much to regain, young lord.’
Young… Nobody called him young these days, not even the Shipwright anymore, compared to whom he was indeed very-very young. Maybe that was why he opened up and suddenly answered with the truth, a truth that he was ashamed of…
’I only feel the loss now,’ he confessed. ’I feel stripped of everything.’
’You are so-so wealthy – you had so much to lose.’
’I am afraid to leave,’ he said it quietly, hanging his head. Admitting to that fear did not make bearing it any easier.
’After all that you had lived through you have fear left? Son of Earendil, you do not seem to understand the hopeful promise of Valimar.’
These days Estel was the one full of hope. Estel – more like any other descendant of Elros he knew – reminded him of his brother so much. He was bright, noble with a heart overflown with courage…
The foreigner seemed to know much about leaving into the West, so he asked suddenly:
’Do you think I would see Meneltarma?’
If he would hear the eternal words of Manwe’s wailing eagles, if he would feel the soul of his brother praying to Eru above the world, if he would hear the cry of the Last Queen…
The stranger raised his arm as if to put it around him, but then awkwardly let it fall to his side.
Not even this curious person dared to pat Elrond Earendilion on the back.
’I wished to embrace you, not pat you, Lord. As I said, you had much to lose.’
’You speak as if you understood… as someone sharing in my sorrow would.’
’I have nothing now.’
The stranger whispered evasively, his voice barely audible above the murmurs of the sea.
’You, however, Healer… you have a chance to become whole yourself.’
But Elrond the Wise felt terribly frail and unwise, as if he were a child again; vulnerable and afraid by the sea, like he once had been.
’My heart aches and I need to have something to hold onto… Something of them, or of myself. See, I had been like this for so long; I had been the one who stayed… Who shall I become, if I leave?’
The stranger looked him directly this time, his silver eyes glinting with a familiar light from inside the shade of his hood.
’You have the possibility of letting go: hold onto that. Many would kill for that chance.’
He leaned forward and embraced him this time, and only now did Elrond see, how much taller the stranger was, compared to him. And though the embrace was strange and unlooked for, he accepted the provided comfort for as long as it lasted.
The stranger then released him without a word, and turned to leave; strolling along the shore, fading slowly into the dusk as realisation dawned on Elrond the Wise.
